TEACHING PRACTICE JOURNAL: WEEK 1
Teaching Practice Journal: Week 1 at G.V.H.S.S Kadakkal
My teaching practice journey at G.V.H.S.S Kadakkal began on 16th July 2025, marking the start of a truly enriching and transformative experience. Each day brought new learning, challenges, and insights that helped me grow as a teacher in training.
Day 1 – 16th July 2025, Wednesday
I reached G.V.H.S.S Kadakkal at 9:00 am and submitted the official letters before signing the attendance register in the presence of the principal. After the morning prayer at 9:25 am, I waited until the first period ended to meet the English teacher, Aswathi teacher, who gave me final instructions and confirmed my assigned class – 8 O – along with the portions to be taught.
Although I was ready to begin teaching, I didn’t get a chance to take class as Aswathi teacher had some pending activities to complete. Along with other B.Ed trainees, I was provided a classroom near the principal’s office. I utilized the time productively by writing my lesson plan, preparing my PowerPoint presentation, and organizing materials for the upcoming classes.
Day 2 – 17th July 2025, Thursday
I reached the school at 9:10 am, signed the attendance register, and spent the morning preparing for my first class. During the sixth period, I finally got the opportunity to teach under the observation of Aswathi teacher.
I taught the prose lesson “Pandora’s Box”, following the lesson plan I had carefully prepared. The students were attentive and interested in the story, which made the class engaging. However, due to time constraints, I could not conduct the planned follow-up activity. After the class, Aswathi teacher provided her feedback, which was both constructive and encouraging, helping me understand how to improve my teaching.
Day 3 – 18th July 2025, Friday
I signed the attendance register in the morning and prepared for my class scheduled during the third period. I began teaching the poem “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” by Emily Dickinson. I introduced the poet and explained the first four lines of the poem, ensuring students grasped the imagery and message behind the verses.
The class went smoothly, and the students participated actively. Later, I helped with lunch duty, assisting in serving food to students. In the afternoon, the school dispersed early due to a strike. We B.Ed trainees stayed back with the staff, using the extra time to prepare lesson plans and complete pending work.
Day 4 – 21st July 2025, Monday
I reached the school on time, signed the register, and followed my schedule diligently. During the sixth period, I continued with the poem “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” and completed it. The session was interactive and enjoyable, as students shared their interpretations of the poem.
We also had lunch duty and helped serve meals to the students. In the afternoon, I got the opportunity to assist in the Vangmayam competition, a literary event conducted in the school. Along with other trainees, I helped guide participants and maintain discipline. It was a valuable experience that allowed me to observe how co-curricular programs are organized and managed in schools.
Day 5 – 23rd July 2025, Wednesday
I reached the school on time and followed the schedule as usual. During my class, I completed the remaining literary devices from the poem and discussed them with the students. Their enthusiasm made the class lively and rewarding.
Later, the School Social Science Scheme selection was held in the auditorium. As instructed by the principal, we B.Ed trainees helped maintain discipline and assisted in correcting papers. During my free time, I worked on preparing study notes for the students and submitted them to Aswathi teacher for review. She appreciated my effort and approved the notes.
The first week of teaching practice at G.V.H.S.S Kadakkal was truly a learning milestone. From classroom management to participating in school events, each day helped me grow both personally and professionally. The guidance from Aswathi teacher, the cooperation of my peers, and the enthusiasm of the students made this week meaningful and memorable.
As I completed my first week, I realized that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge—it’s about inspiring curiosity, building relationships, and learning continuously. This first week has laid a strong foundation for the journey ahead, and I look forward to the weeks to come with renewed confidence and enthusiasm.
