TEACHING PRACTICE : WEEK 4
Teaching Practice – Week Four Reflection
The fourth week of my teaching practice at G.V.H.S.S Kadakkal was both insightful and inspiring. By this time, I had grown more confident in handling classes, using teaching aids effectively, and balancing both academic and co-curricular responsibilities. Each day of this week brought new learning experiences — from classroom observations to discipline duties, diagnostic tests, and interactive teaching sessions.
Day 16 – Thursday, 7 August 2025
The day began with the morning assembly, where teachers and students came together in the school courtyard. After the assembly, I prepared for my teaching period and reviewed my lesson materials. During the sixth period, I taught the prose lesson “The Day My World Changed” by Malala Yousafzai. I used ICT tools, flashcards, and charts to make the class visually engaging and help students relate to Malala’s story and message. The students participated enthusiastically, sharing their thoughts and responding well to the activities.
Our teacher educator, Sai Miss, observed the class. After the session, she offered reflective feedback, appreciating the use of visuals and interaction while suggesting ways to further enhance time management and student assessment. The class reminded me how powerful visual learning can be. The feedback I received was motivating — it helped me see where I could refine my teaching further.
Day 17 – Friday, 8 August 2025
The day started with the usual morning assembly, followed by an instruction from the Headmaster to assist in a bag check as part of the school’s discipline measures. We helped the teachers carry it out systematically.
During the third period, I gave students their notes for the lesson “A Prescription for Life.” They were attentive and wrote down the content neatly. The rest of the day was spent performing lunch duty and attending substitution classes, where I engaged students in short language activities to maintain discipline and productivity. Discipline and classroom management are essential parts of a teacher’s role — this day reminded me that teaching extends beyond academics; it’s also about guiding students in behavior and values.
Day 18 – Monday, 11 August 2025
The new week began on a positive note with the morning assembly. During the second period, we were assigned to Class 8 H to assist a teacher in conducting a diagnostic test, ensuring that students maintained discipline and understood the process.
In the sixth period, I continued with “A Prescription for Life” in 8 O. I discussed the activity questions, guided the students in writing answers, and conducted a group activity to encourage peer learning. The students participated actively and collaborated well with their classmates. Group activities proved to be an excellent way to make learning more engaging and help students develop teamwork skills alongside their academic understanding.
Day 19 – Tuesday, 12 August 2025
I reached school on time and prepared for the day’s class. During the sixth period, I continued with the next part of “The Day My World Changed.” Using ICT support, I displayed visuals and real images connected to Malala’s story, which captured the students’ attention.
They listened intently, wrote down the glossary and answers neatly, and showed genuine interest in the lesson. The group activity encouraged discussion and helped them understand the deeper message of courage and education. This session strengthened my belief that technology-supported teaching can make even complex or emotional topics more relatable and inspiring for students.
Day 20 – Wednesday, 13 August 2025
The day began with a few announcements regarding the upcoming School Parliament election, which filled the campus with excitement. During the second period, I taught the next paragraph of “The Day My World Changed” using ICT. The students were interactive and actively engaged in the group tasks and discussions. Their participation reflected both interest and understanding.
Later, we performed lunch duty and assisted teachers in the smooth conduct of the Guides and Scouts selection held in the school auditorium at 2:00 p.m. During the sixth period, we supported Sruthi teacher in Class 8 L, helping maintain discipline and assisting her observation. This day highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration among teachers. Assisting in various programs gave me a broader understanding of the multifaceted role teachers play in school life.
Week Four was a perfect blend of academic growth, observation, and co-curricular involvement. The observation by Sai Miss was a valuable learning opportunity that helped me reflect deeply on my teaching methods. Handling two prose lessons simultaneously — “A Prescription for Life” and “The Day My World Changed” — taught me to plan lessons more effectively and adapt my approach to suit the class mood and time.
Participating in school-level duties like discipline checks, diagnostic tests, and election assistance also gave me a glimpse of the administrative and social dimensions of a teacher’s responsibilities. By the end of this week, I realized that being a teacher is about balance — balancing lessons with life skills, classroom management with compassion, and structure with creativity. Each experience added another layer to my learning journey, shaping me into a more confident and thoughtful teacher-in-training.
